Your Psoriatic Arthritis Healthcare Team

It’s important to build the right healthcare team for your psoriatic arthritis. Seek out health professionals who are experienced in psoriatic arthritis care and take the time to listen to how the disease is affecting you.

Dermatologist: A good dermatologist (skin specialist) is an important member of your healthcare team. Work to find one who treats many patients with your type of psoriasis. Dermatologists who don't see a lot of people with psoriasis may not know as much about new treatment strategies.

Psychologist/Therapist: If you need professional help to better cope with your feelings about having psoriatic arthritis, your dermatologist may be able to suggest someone who you can talk with. Or, ask someone you know with psoriasis to make a recommendation.

Rheumatologist: You may need to see an arthritis specialist for your condition. A rheumatologist is a physician trained and experienced in diagnosing and treating arthritis and other joint, muscle and bone diseases. Rheumatologists can help you deal with your pain, stiffness and swelling in and around the joints. Your rheumatologist may consult with your primary care physician or dermatologist.

Primary care physician: Since many cases of psoriatic arthritis are mild and involve only a few joints, your personal physician will likely be involved in managing your condition.

Nurse practitioner: Advanced Practice Nurses can provide high-quality care and treatment to patients. They can diagnose and treat a variety of health problems and inform patients about lifestyle changes that can improve their health.

Physician assistant: These health professionals are licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. They perform a comprehensive range of medical duties, from basic primary care to high-technology specialty procedures.
