When Your Treatment is Denied by Your Insurance Company

Make an appeal; here’s how:

  1. Get the scoop. Log on to your insurance company’s website or call customer service to find out what your plan covers and if you need to meet any “pre-authorization” requirements.
  2. Turn to the pros. Ask your dermatologist’s staff if they know shortcuts or key language that can make your appeal successful.
  3. Call in extra help. Some drug companies offer advice on what to say to an insurer during an appeal. And many offer patient-assistance programs to those who can’t get medication any other way. Check the company’s website or call customer service.
